1st ClimbFest of 2013

23 Mar

37 mile ride this morning. It was cold. It was dry. We set out to climb! I had a loose plan of attack for the morning.

I was meeting Parker at 8. He is always down with whatever. Do you want to cruise through NW and up Thompson? Sure. Do you want to ride Skyline to Newberry? Whatever. Descend Newberry? Ascend Newberry? Yeah that is fine. What are your thoughts on Old Germantown? Never done it! That is kind of how the conversation went as we got to each climb.

The ride was awesome. We had a good conversation. Nice pace. We discussed who was going to drive down to Wildflower. It is too bad that we both have cars that get 12mpg…because that is going to be a lot of gas. We are going to try to recruit another sucka to drive down with us and share gas costs.

As we were ascending Old Germantown we came across a lady that was in a small Chevy truck that somehow got herself stuck in the mud. We tried to help her or Parker tried to help her mostly.

He had sticks under the tires, he had me jumping in the bed (for extra weight), nothing worked. 😦 After a 15 minute break Amy decided she would just call triple A and we were off.

Minutes after these shenanigans we were at the junction of Old Germantown and Germantown(farely large thoroughfare in the west hills)…We see this guy, on what looked like a hybrid bike, NO helmet, with earbuds in, in a collared short sleeve shirt and shorts. WHAT? That guy rode up that climb? We passed him and turned back onto Skyline. He kept going on Germantown. It never seizes to amaze me who rides bikes!!

I lost my 2nd pair of cycling gloves in 2 month last weekend so I have been wearing a pair of running gloves and a flannel pair together. Works ok for commuting but not for this morning. Greg is out-of-town and the only pair of his gloves I could find of his were Isotoners. I borrowed them…hopefully I can get them cleaned before he gets home tomorrow! I had latex gloves on underneath to help stay warm! The combo was PERFECT. I cannot say the same for my feet. One pair of socks. I do not owe shoe covers (I should probably get some)! My feet were freezing by the time I got home. I thought hopefully they thaw before tonight. Luckily I had to do a transition run and that helped..A LOT!! Other than that I dressed pretty appropriately!

Awesome ride…Thanks Parker!

This afternoon Becky and I hosted a beginner coffee hour. New (beginner) triathletes can come with questions and we just talk all things triathlon.

What makes anything better? Treats!! I made a couple batches of cookies. This weeks kitchen craziness was much better than last weeks!

I got both recipes from How Sweet It Is. Jessica has lots of great recipes. I typically only make her sweets though. First up were Mocha Almond Fudge Cookies.
Coffee, chocolate chips, roasted almonds, very moist, delicious!

Secondly were Confetti Compost Cookies.
It is no secret that I love cookies with lots of “stuff” in them. These were perfect because there is definitely lots of “stuff” in them. Chocolate chunks, pb chips, pretzels, salt & vinegar chips, toffee nibs, there is supposed to be sprinkles but I only had the colored dots!

We had a fun time at the coffee hour! I love talking triathlon with whoever will listen. 🙂

Happy saturday! How was your bike ride today? Did you bake anything?

I had my taxes done, colored my hair and then went to a poker party and won 3.20. Fun day for me as well. No exercise or treats. Sad.

OMG that coffee hour sounds amazing!!!! I wish I could come!! Your ride sounds interesting too, way to do a good deed and help that lady 🙂 I just got toe covers for my shoes, I tried them for the first time yesterday and they helped a little, but I also had two pairs of socks on. I really need new gloves though!

The latex gloves under the gloves is the best trick ever!! I wish I could put them on my feet. Sometimes I use plastic bags for my feet. That works pretty good in the rain!

Sounds like a great ride today. I’ve always wanted to take up biking but I don’t know if I’d LOVE it enough to put it up there with running and justify buying a bike.

No baked goods today… I don’t bake that often because it’s only my hubs and I and when I bake I always make full recipes and there is WAY too much.

p.s. we read a lot of the same blogs (your blog roll) Not surprised 🙂

You definitely have to “want” to ride because it takes a lot more time than running. You have to get ready to ride…you acutally have to do the ride…you have to finish the ride…clean up..set up!! Running is so much easier you put your shoes on and GO!!

I have to be baking for someone or something or an event because if I have the whole batch at home…I eat them all…which is no good!

      Great minds think alike!! 🙂

Funny you wrote you were “jumping in the bed” … Uh huh… Crazy girl!

Parker made me!! The tires were spinning and it just needed more weight in the back!! I was nervous!! It actually almost worked!!
