How To Make a HOLY COW Cake

If you know me pretty well, you will know that I do not make the same treats more than once. USUALLY! Now if you begged me or bribed me or paid me…it would be a different story.

I have made The Holy Cow Cake probably 5 times. Definitely a crowd favorite. I think my friends would want me to make it for every birthday, every occasion, if I would!

My swim team was having an Easter dinner last week and my friend, Erica, wanted me to make a dessert for her. I said that I would make a Holy Cow Cake. I think that everyone would like it! I made it. As far as I heard everyone liked it…I did not go to the party because I was up in the sky flying to San Fran.

As I was making the cake, I thought I should do a how to post. Fun! Here goes nothing.

The original recipe came from the Cake Mix Doctor Book. I have loosely used her recipe in part. As you read you will understand. I used to like this cookbook but then I decided that I liked making things from scratch instead!

FIRST you make the cake. I am going to give you 3 ways to make it: easy, easier, and moderate.

1. Buy a Devil’s Food Cake Mix-Stir in 3 eggs, 1 C sour cream, 1/2 vegetable oil, and 1/2 c water.
2. Buy a Devil’s Food Cake Mix-Use the directions on the back of the box.
3. From Scratch: I use this Devils Food Cake recipe.

SECOND let it cool. Make lots of holes in the top. Something with a fuller base. Like a straw, chopsticks, or a BBQ skewer. If all else fails you COULD use a fork.

THIRD make the filling. 1 can of sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 C or so caramel(I use Smuckers). Mix that together. Pour about 1/2 of it over the cake…into the holes. Let it sink into the holes and the crevices.

Pour the rest of it over.

FOURTH decide on the candy. I have always used Health or Skor Bar. The original recipe was Butterfinger. You can use whatever you would like. Take a couple of bars and smash them up real good. My philosophy is more the better!!

FIFTH take half of the crushed candy bar and put it on top of the cake.

SIXTH make the frosting
1. (Easy) Buy a tub of cool-whip(12oz?) and 8oz of cream cheese(room temperature) mix together.
2. (Harder) Make whip cream (2ish C of heavy whipping cream + 3/4ish C powdered sugar) and 8oz of cream cheese(room temperature) mix together.
**NOTE**For the whip cream I just kind of mix them together. I am no professional. I like to do these kinds of things off the cuff so sometimes I add more sugar or less sugar depending on what I am using it for. If you bake and usually make whip cream you will know what I am talking about. If you do not bake much (or nervous for making of the REAL whip cream) than I would probably just opt for #1. 🙂

SEVENTH spread over the first layer of candy BUT BE CAREFUL not to stir up the candy.

    I don’t even like cream cheese and this cake is da BOMB!! So yummy. Of course, chocolate, Heath bars and caramel…’nuff said! I feel very lucky to have been the recipient of this cake on my birthday. Thanks Leslie!!

      Did I put cream cheese in yours? I may have left it out becaue you are “special” and do not like cream cheese! That was a fun birthday party! Was that the 4-0?
