Sub 7 or BUST!

1 May

The #1 GOAL of next weekend at Wildflower(WF) is to come home with a Sub 7:00hr. All I need is 6:59:59.

Lets review what I have done in the PAST:

’09–I had a GREAT race. I was still a total ROOKIE triathlete. The only goal here was to FINISH! CHECK!

’10–I had an AWFUL race. I went into this race with the mindset of “I am going to kill it” that was not the case. I was not MENTALLY there. I hated almost every minute of the race this year. I got out of the swim and was so mad that I had the exact same swim time as the year before. I got on my bike and I was still pissed. Then I have the same bike time. WTF?? I was surprised, to say the least, that I had taken 6 minutes off my run! A WF PR!

’11–Another GREAT year. I went back to the mind frame of: I just want to go out and have a good race. I had a good swim. I was happy about that. The bike was tough. It was super windy. Wind in all directions. Everytime I turned a corner there was a headwind that would not go away. 😦 Another good run year. I stayed mentally with it. I had a hard time deciphering if I was doing better or worse than the year before. Another WF PR. So close to sub 7 but so far away!

Here we are 2 years later. 2012 was an exceptional race year. I took the year off from Wildflower. I PR’d the Olympic, Half-Iron, and Iron distance triathlons. I worked hard on my swim, bike, and run! I especially worked on my mental toughness and digging deep. I accomplished all of my goals last year.

I feel like I have trained hard in the last 4 months. Unfortunately, I am in no way in the SWIM shape I was going into IMAZ. The BIKE has been good but a lot of the 4 months were spent on the trainer. The RUN has been my most worked on discipline. After my injury I took some time off from running and gradually got back into it. Fortunately I have come back stronger and faster.

That being said: Here are this years goals:

I am going to position myself more strategically (in the front instead of the back) in the SWIM. I am a stronger swimmer now. I need to get up in the mix of things. I want to take it a little easier the first 20 miles of the BIKE and then go for it. The RUN is the hardest for me. I need to just get out of transition and start running at a slower pace. Get settled in early and bring it on home!!
It is going to be hot and windy. That is really no different then any other year.

Now it is in print! I do feel like the pressure is on. Sometimes when that happens I do not do as good as I want and everything goes to shit. I hope writing this post puts some fire under me so I can let it RIP and not look back!!! Here goes nothing!!

Do you like to make GOALS for yourself? What are some of yours goals for this summer?

Wow! Look at your achievements. I am debating whether or not I want to try an Olympic distance this year. I don’t think I could ever do a Half! You are a rock star!

    Good luck at Wildflower!

Thanks!!! I actually love Olys. You should definitely try one. I think they are better than sprints but not as much training as halfs!! 🙂

I’m so excited for you! I’m positive you’ll be under 7 hours this year! From reading your blog, I think I’ve seen quite a bit of improvements on your run!
    I’ll be thinking of you!

You are going to do so great this weekend! Good luck and have fun!! Sounds like your mental mindset will be a big part of having a great race, but you have improved on this a lot since your last WF race. Can’t wait to see how you do!
