Pac Crest Long Course Race Report

I arrived in Sunriver on Friday. After lunch with Kristen, a dip in the lake, a shake out run, and dinner it was time to go to bed! I didn’t sleep very well Thursday or Friday night. I had the alarm set for 5:30 but there was a bird chirping outside my window waking me up at 4:46! Dang it!

It all started then. I was going to do my 10th long course(half-ironman) triathlon today! I was excited but nervous. I had everything laid out!

After breakfast, slathering myself with sunscreen and body glide, and getting dressed. We were out the door at 6:45. The course is a point to point meaning, we swim at the lake (where T1 is at), bike back to Sunriver (where T2 is at), and run pretty much the perimeter of Sunriver.

We dropped our run stuff off at T2 and headed to the lake. I am a minimalist with the “stuff” I have in transition. No extra stuff. Only the necessities! Set up T1 and pumped up my tires. Talked to some peeps!

Went for a quick warm up swim. The course was different this year. It was a 2 loop swim. I was in wave 2. 9:01 right after the elite wave. I did not realize it was women and men 30-34. That was a whole different ball game. The wave was probably just under 100 bodies. We only had one minute to hop in the water and wade while we waited for the horn.

Swim: 36:12 (goal: <36 minutes) I quickly decided where I wanted to be. It was GO TIME! I was in the mix and in front. I felt good didn't push too hard at the beginning. I did a lot of drafting. I sighted really well. Had a fantastic swim. Honestly I thought I would have been more in the 34 minute range. I got out and was sad to see the 36 but it was not going to ruin my day.

T1: 2:37 (goal 2:30) quick/short run up the ramp; sunscreen on, sunglasses, helmet, and shoes on and I was out of the gate.

Bike: 3:20 (goal 3:05) Coach’s orders were to take the first half hour easy. Too easy! I did. I worked on nutrition. I worked on my breath. Bike computer was started just for feeding/hydrating purposes. The first 28 miles are rolling. Felt really good. It was warm but ok. The scenery is great. My nutrition was right on. I did feel like there was a headwind. Just kept moving forward.

I was at 1:30 at 28 miles. The next 12 miles or so are the big climbing miles. There are 3 pitches with some short flat and downhill stretches in between. We were climbing Mt. Bachelor. I had gotten to the hard part. I thought I am right on track. The climbing will be hard and it was. I felt like I had paced myself well up to this point. The first and second pitch came and went. It was hard. We were getting higher and higher. It was cooling down a bit which was a relief for the time being. The clouds also looked like they were rolling in which was nice. The last 2 miles to the summit are hard and steep. I passed a couple of guys. All of a sudden I was there. At 40ish miles I was clocked at 2:30. Slow but doing fine.

Long descent from here which was super fun!! I think only 2 or 3 guys passed me in the next 10ish miles! Kept with my fueling and hydrating. Right on track there! Did not know where I was time wise. I knew there was no way I was going to hit my 3:05 but surely I would clock under a 3:17(my ’09 split). The next 8ish miles are rolling and it was already hot. (This course is 58.5 miles instead of the usual 56 miles) Still felt good. Finished up my fuel. I felt like I had a solid bike ride. I was ready to get out of the saddle and run. I was at 3:58 (overall time) on my watch! WHAT!!??? SLOW??!! Again sad it was slower than I thought but I still had to be POSITIVE for the run.

T2: 2:00 (goal: 2:00) They have changed T2 since ’09. Which makes the course longer. Which makes the running into transition a considerable amount longer! I was pissed and pretty much walked! I saw Kellie, Nik, and Stephanie which was fun! Off I went!

Run: 2:22 (goal: 2:18-2:20) I can tell you from the beginning it was rough. It was scorching out. There is very little shade. The one good thing was there was some cloud cover. Coach’s orders again were to take it easy. TOO EASY for the first mile. Great cause I had no desire to do anything faster than that!! πŸ™‚

I made the decision to run with my handheld water bottle with Nuun. This was the BEST IDEA I had all day! I also was happy I had my music. That started at mile 1!! The first aid station was not until mile 2.5! I was running as strong as I could. It was gentle rolling hills but they felt like mountains! I was doing my regular Gu regimen. A 1/3 of a Gu at every mile. I was drinking and pouring water on my head at every aid station. I put a cup of ice down my bra at EVERY aid station. I was a little nervous that I would be super chafed there but I.DID.NOT.CARE!! Whatever relief I could get I would take!!

3,4,5,6 were done. The miles seem to take forever to get to. Most were in between 10:45-11:15. I did not think I could go any faster than that! If I could just keep this pace I would be ok. I was tired and it was sooooooooo HOT!!! I was now walking a little…seconds in between the aid stations. I got to mile 8 and saw Erica, Nik, and Laura. That cheered me up a bit. I was at 5:23(overall time). NEW GOAL: Sub 6:25. I still had 1 hour. I felt like It was going to be the longest hour of my life. It pretty much was!!

At this point on the course there is ZERO SHADE. The sun is beating down on you. At this point it was pretty much flat. It is boring. But we are running next to the river which looks good enough to jump in. I will take the DNF for a float down the river. Ha Ha just kidding!

8,9,10,11 miles were down. SUFFERFEST! I was walking more often but still not for very long. I did not want to give up! I mean I did want to give up but I was still digging deep! Erica rode up on her bike at about 10 and asked if I needed anything. I said only if I could have a ride on your handlebars!! I just kept telling myself to keep it together almost done.

12,13 miles took forever. DEATHMARCH! Just walking and running. I stopped caring. I just wanted to be done! I finally got to the spectators cheering! Finally the finish line: 6:23:43!! I was so excited to be DONE! It was not a sub-6. It was not a 6:03-6:07. It was not a 6:10. It was slower than I ever dreamt it would be. BUT All in All I had a good race. I put in a solid effort in all 3 legs. It was HOT and miserable!

I realized I did not have my chip on. I talked to the timing people and they caught my number and time. Apparently I was not the first person to lose their chip! I was more mad about having to pay a replacement fee for the chip than actually having a time! When I saw the results posted and I only had a swim time, I thought my chip might be in my wetsuit and IT WAS!

AFTERTHOUGHTS: I had a good race. I am not beating myself up. Had the conditions been better I am sure I would have done better. We can not have perfect conditions and perfect races every time! πŸ™‚ I do not think I would have done anything different. Not sure that I left EVERYTHING on the course but mostly I did! I have not looked at my Garmin profile yet but it will be interesting to see what my splits on the run were.

    It was so hot out this weekend! Way to push through it anyway and finish the race even though it didn’t turn out as you planned.

    It was wonderful to meet you on Friday!! πŸ™‚ Can’t wait until HTC. And I want to hear more about Ironman training next time we meet up too.

    Wow- your 10th half- impressive! Congratulations are definitely in order! It sounds like you pushed and dealt with the heat well.
    The second half of the bike sounds tough! And the heat on the run, too. Way to go! Hope you take some time to relax now!

      The climbs are hard but the descent makes it better! πŸ™‚ It is a tough course in general! Elevation and heat are always factors!! 😦

    I wondered why your other times didn’t show up! What a bummer! Thank goodness for Garmin! Ha! If I could swim like you, I’d would be a happy triathlete! You are a FISH. Glad to see you race morning.

      I could not believe that the chip was in my wetsuit. I should have known. It came off at WF too but I caught it before I left transition. πŸ™‚ Swimming is one of my faves!! You need to join a masters team!!

      OHHH Thanks!! I did have a great race. It was such hard conditions. I wanted to give up so bad but I worked so hard the last 6 months that I couldn’t just give up!! πŸ™‚ I PR’d the course by 17 minutes so that is definitely something!!
