Bike Ride + Yumm Sauce + Outdoor Swim

26 Jul

Can I tell you how much fun it is just to do one work out a day!! Well it is pretty amazing. I know how it feels to be “normal” again!

Yesterday Dan and I went on a 25 mile ride. I really did not want to go. But he made me! He even pumped up my tires while I was sitting on the couch. It was finally time to make up water bottles:

Me: How many water bottles are you going to take?
D: I am taking 3.
Me: What? 25 miles. We really only need 1.
D: It is hot out there.
Me: Ok. 2 should be totally fine.

We have air in our tires. We have 2 water bottles full of Nuun. We are out the door. It was certainly hot. High 80s. My first water bottle was warm before we even got onto the path! 3 miles in!

We had a great mid-week ride. Mostly flat. A few rollers. We had a nice tail wind on the way out. We were doing an out and back so you know what that means for the way home–headwind! 😦

We took turns leading. I won’t tell you who was the draftee for most of it. But you all know that I am a pretty good cyclist. 🙂 He did keep up pretty good.

On the way back we went over the Hawthorne bridge. The Hawthorne bridge has the best paths for peds/cycles. I have probably only been over it twice since I moved to the east side. They put in a new cycle meter at the beginning of the year. 5000+ cycles YESTERDAY! Crazy!!

Who knew we would actually need 3 bottles for a mid-week ride. All in all I was happy we went!!

WE got home and made Yumm bowls. Now if you have never heard of Cafe Yumm, you are missing out and probably do not live in Oregon. It started in Eugene and expanded throughout Oregon.

You can buy the sauce at the café but you can also find it in some of the grocery stores here. I went through a bit of a period a couple of years ago when I made EVERYTHING homemade. I was excited to find a “yumm” sauce recipe. I do not have that original recipe that I used so many times but I did find a similar one that I changed a bit.

Once you make or buy the sauce. You can make a bowl. There are so many variations to this. When you go to the café and get the original yumm bowl, you get: rice, beans, shredded cheese, avocado, salsa, sour cream, cilantro, tomatoes, olives, and yumm sauce. This is what it looks like:

Yumm Sauce
(Adapted from: Love and Greens)

Here is what you need:
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup almonds
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
1/3 cup nutritional yeast
1 can garbanzo beans or 15oz
3-4 cloves garlic
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp dried cilantro (I usually use fresh cilantro–a big heap)
1 tsp curry powder

Here is what you do:
Put all of the ingredients into a blender or food processor and MIX!!

When I make a bowl I use whatever I have in the fridge. A typical bowl for me is:
Quinoa (any grain is fine, rice takes too long to cook)
Beans (black, pinto, and kidney are usually what I have on hand)
Protein (tofu/tempeh) or nothing if that is what you prefer
Veggies (broccoli and bell peppers or on a bed of spinach are typical)
Cheese, olives, salsa, avocado, and sauce

**If you like the cheese melty a little than put the grain down, cheese on, beans on top, and then layer it with everything else**

Here is what our bowls looked like:

Mine was on the left; Dan's was on the right

We used brown rice and Brussels sprouts, but I forgot the avocado at the grocery store. Epic Fail!! They were delicious!

I finally made it to the outdoor pool I have been telling you about! It was so much fun! I am no longer “in training” so I was just swimming. I did decide I needed a work out or I would not swim for that long! 😦 There was 4 people in the medium lane and only 2 people in the fast lane. I did not really want to swim that hard but I went for the fast lane. It definitely pushed me knowing there were people in the lane that were “fast”. Which was probably good!

The pool was warm, 84 degrees! Plus the sun made it even hotter. I am glad I was not doing long intervals cause I would have really gotten overheated. <—-weird to say when I was actually in a pool!!

By the end it was kind of a shitshow. There was about 6 of us. There were 2 guys that I think were there to socialize more than swim but they stayed out-of-the-way pretty good.

Here is the BIGGEST thing I learned when swimming outside: DO NOT put sunscreen on your legs if you are planning on using the pull buoy! It was slipping and sliding all over the place. My cap also slid while putting that one but once it was on it was ok.

Are you lucky enough to swim in an outdoor pool?

Have you heard of Café Yumm or tried the sauce??

I swim outside at the neighborhood pool, but there’s only one lap lane so it doesn’t always work out. The other night there were two ladies doing the side-crawl in the lap lane, so I had to battle the kids in the main part of the pool!

Really glad to see the pic of you & your new… Umm what ever we are calling him… Hobby! Tire Pumper! Partner in sweat! I should stop there. 🙂 and he should never ever ever let you forget your rookie move with the water bottles.

You are so glad to only do one work out a day… then you go for a 24 mile ride and then swim laps, that’s two workouts, right? Yes I have had a yumm bowl, in Indiana! You made it for me! Yummy! Wonder if I can order yumm sauce on the Internet?

Seriously yum looking at your bowls!
I’m always so in awe by the cyclists there; that’s incredible how many people ride!
And I’m super jealous of the outdoor pool. I’m stuck inside. I wonder if I’d like swim training more if I had a nice outdoor pool?!

There are a lot of outdoor pools in Sacramento. Most gyms have them actually (but not mine!). I just found my community pool has lap swim times, so I have been trying to get there instead. So nice to swim outside.
