My Visit to Lake Tahoe!

27 Sep

July 2012 there was an announcement. Ironman was going to have an inaugural Lake Tahoe Ironman September 2013. I got multiple texts and emails. Are you going to sign up? I thought hells no! I had lots of reasons. Money being the first and foremost but a close second was: I was planning on taking 2013 off from Ironman. My third thought was: an Ironman at 6500ft Plus 6000ft of climbing. That sounded like hell!! I.WAS.OUT! It was an easy NO!

With multiple friends doing it I was IN TO GO! I had my plane ticket. I had a place to stay. I was all signed up to volunteer. My friends were all revved up and was going to kick Lake Tahoe’s ass!!!

I had a stop over in Reno. I saw my friend Eva. She made me Billionaire Bars. They were ammaazzzing!! When she dropped me off in Lake Tahoe she sent the pan with me. My friends were so excited and loved every crumb! Thanks Eva!!

We went to South Creek Pizza Co for dinner Friday night. It is a new place. Delicious!! We sat at the bar and got to see all the happenings in the kitchen. Super fun!!

Saturday I headed to Lake Tahoe to see the gang. It was so nice not to be racing. Just relaxing. I was just happy to be there to spectate and volunteer!

It was pouring rain on Saturday and freezing. Sheryl and I headed up to Squaw(T2) to the volunteer meeting. It was a ghost town. Usually the expo was busy but no one wanted to be outside! šŸ˜¦

WE really wanted to be in the Mens change tent

They would not allow us. We settled for the women’s change tent.

The air temp at the start, was going to be in the 30s, which meant EVERYONE was going to do a full change —> from swimsuits to bike gear. It was going to be crazier than I ever dreamt! šŸ˜¦

Dan, Sheryl, and I headed to the swim start at a very early 5:45. It turned out to be dry and the swim was a rolling start but we heard it was just as bad as a mass start.

Do you se all of our eyes are looking in a different direction?

Do you see all of our eyes are looking in a different direction?

Sheryl and I headed to the change tent at about 7. The women started to arrive at 7:30. It got chaotic real fast and did not slow down. Until we sent the last 2 women out at 9:30! The women came in FROZEN! They couldn’t feel their feet or hands.

Before and after the swim

Before and after the swim

The tent was way too small. There was not enough volunteers. Who could predict that the conditions would be this crazy! I saw a few of my friends but not all of them. These were the longest transitions I have ever seen.

After all the craziness of the change tent we headed back to the house to cheer everyone on. Our house was right on the bike course. I was tracking a shit-ton of people. There was a lot of cowbelling and yelling in front of our house. Pretty much a party going on.

THIS.COURSE.WAS.BRUTAL! After they swam in what was too cold temps, now they were riding one of the toughest courses in high elevation. I was so glad I wasn’t racing but everyone I knew was killing it!

We headed to Squaw at about 5:30. More cowbell. Everyone was doing great!

We stayed until midnight. Pure craziness!! But super fun!

Congrats to all the finishers of the IMLT 2013. Especially Michele, Johan, Tim, Steve, Nik, Krista(1st), Sue, Erin, Kevin, Heidi(1st), Rob, Kat, Justin, Hani(1st), and Cindy W(1st).

Have you volunteered at a major event or even a small one??

Sounds like it was a brutal day! I did a triathlon the same day and the announcer was telling us about the conditions at IMLT, yikes! I thought we had it back with water temps in the 60s and the air was in the 40s!

I have never volunteered at any event, large or small, but I would love to! I am hoping to maybe go to Syracuse next summer but am not sure yet.

      How was your race??
Volunteering is so fun. Not as fun as racing but a close 2nd! šŸ™‚

Glad you had fun volunteering at IM Tahoe. I can’t believe how cold it was! Definitely a bit of a weird cold streak — it has warmed up this week.

Such a great recap! The T1 tent would have been a great place to volunteer so you could see how tough the cold really made it.
I can’t imagine how busy you were with everyone fully changing and freezing! I bet you were a F-U-N volunteer to have!
The last event I volunteered at was as a corner marshall during one of my husband’s bike races. It was a lot of fun until they had to cancel the race due to a terrible bike crash.
