Saturday Surf City Run

28 Dec

As you know I have been in Newport Beach all week living the dream! The weather has been bliss. I will give you more of a recap in a few days I just wanted to check in and tell you about my run this morning. We have had a couple of good runs on the beach this week.

I debated on the distance I wanted to do today. I was going to try a little something different for AZ marathon this time around. I really wanted to do a 20 miler 2 weeks out instead of 3 weeks out but in the end did the 20 today and will have a traditional taper.

I really wanted to do a “different route” for my 20 miler.

Wouldn’t you change your plans too? ๐Ÿ™‚

We got out the door at 6:10 sharp! I wanted to beat the “heat.” I had to be done by 10:00 So I could go sit in an ice bath Pacific Ocean for 20 minutes. Breakfast was going to be served at 10:30! Pressure was on!

Dan is still having some foot problems but he was able to run with me this week and 5.5 miles this morning. We ran and out and back through the Newport Beach “strand.” We ran back by the house to drop off Dan. I kept running. Dan went home to get a cruiser bike and my supplies.

We met back up at about 7.5. We cruised into Huntington Beach together. I was running and he was riding. We were set to go 5 miles out and turn around at mile 13. Felt pretty good. The sun was out. I was pretty much winging my nutrition. I am usually set on Gu/Nuun but I had a variety of supplies today.

I had Nuun, Water, Gatorade, Snickers, and Gu. (There was water in the Sprite bottle–to refill the Nuun/water bottles)

Once we got to about 14-15 I was starting to fade! (per usual) I just kept thinking I have less than an hour. You can do it. I was trying to pump myself up and keep my mind off the running. Dan was doing a great job of keeping me company.

Then it happened! Mile 17.28! Dan’s front tire blew. It was a loud pop and I jumped a foot. Who even knew you could get a flat on a cruiser tire!

I was digging deep to finish this run. I ran ahead while Dan walked the bike. At mile 19 I turned around to run back to Dan. Finished the 20 miles and then walked the rest of the way with Dan.

We got home, ate breakfast, and then the icebath happened!

It took a while to get in. Dan dragged me out there and it was soooooooo COLD!

Bring on taper!

Oh my am I ever envious of your run! And I love that Dan cruised beside you! I had no idea anything could puncture those fat tires either!
An ice bath in there would be cold but much more enjoyable than a true ice bath!
Can’t wait to hear about the rest of your trip.

It was so fun having Dan with me. Of course the miles I needed him most were those last few. What doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh my gosh, what a gorgeous run! So nice that Dan was able to ride most of the way with you. It’s always hard to get in the water for a nice bath, but maybe going into the ocean is more fun than the tub. Good luck with your taper!!
