Ragnar Keys Re-Cap

I arrived late Thursday. I was happy for the 11:30 start time Friday morning UNTIL we woke up and it was already hot. THIS IN: Florida does not participate in winter! WTF? I guess I did not really know that when I signed up for this. πŸ™‚

It may have been better to start early but then who knows what time a day I would have been running legs 2/3. Lots of factors!

Let me talk about my team for a minute! Kristen and Raechel put together this team. I was invited by Kristen. She was basically the only one I knew. (I had met her hubs, Ryan, once.) I met the team. Everyone seemed awesome. We were a team of 13. We had 11 runners(1 last minute drop) and 2 drivers. We were representing 5 states: 5 from California, 2 from New York, 3 from Florida, 2 from Ohio, and me.

It is such a different and awesome experience with mostly strangers.

We got to the start line: safety briefing, swag, pictures, usual stuff. I was nervous. It was hot and humid! I had been hydrating with Nuun. I was ready to go.

11:30am: Nuunaritaville was on the move.

Leg 1: 6 miles. I wanted to really take it easy. The first 3 miles were tough. No shade. I was sweating before we even got out of the parking lot. By mile 3 I was drenched in sweat. We ran over this really tall bridge(the only significant hill) and my pace was still decent. At least the first 3 “scenic” miles.

The second 3 miles were even tougher and boring. (Just running city streets in Miami) My only saving grace was I was in and out out of the shade. The air is so thick I couldn’t breath. My team met me for a power arch about mile 4. My right toes were falling asleep. (Not sure on that one? I think my laces were too tight. I loosened them for leg 3 and it was better).

I finally finished just over an hour. I was so happy to be done. I “thought” that weather wise that would be the worst one.

SIDE NOTE: I love being runner 1 but the worst part is you have to wait until your whole van is done before you get a meal!! 😦

Leg 2: 8.8 miles. I was most excited for this one. Everyone knows the night leg is almost always my favorite leg.

I was also very excited that the sun was down and significantly cooler than the morning leg. I decided to run with music and change up the shoes (when I had not really planned on doing either of those things).

9ish pm: Matt handed off to me and I was off. Again the breathing. The air is so thick! I felt pretty good. My pace was pretty good.Β  Cruising right along. Mile 4ish we were running down a stretch of I don’t even know Everglades grass and such and it was all of a sudden cooler! Score!

I saw a raccoon 2 feet away which was cool and not so cool at the same time.

Saw the team for another power arch around 5. We crossed the street and it was super muggy again. Weird.

I leap frogged with a lady for the last couple of miles which was kind of fun cause it made the time go by quicker!

Miles 6.5-8ish were on a gravel road with potholes and mud. That was super annoying but went ok. The vans went another way. Not sure why we couldn’t run along with the vans.

We finished off the second legs and relaxed from about 3am-8am. I think that I was the best sleeper. I had 4 naps. I usually don’t sleep that much. I typically navigate a lot too but I didn’t at all this weekend. I was kind of in the rover seat. Just going with the flow.

We got up and got going. We met up with Van 2 at about 10. The sun was out and blazing hot again!

10:10ish: 2.4 miles! I could not have been happier with 2.4 miles. I usually don’t like the real short legs but this weekend in the Florida heat I was perfectly happy with a 25 minute run!

I decided that I didn’t want to wear my Garmin. I was going to run naked. I really did not want to see my pace! I started off and I was immediately drenched in sweat. My legs were heavy but I was doing ok. I passed a couple of people.

I just kept telling myself this is ONLY 2.4 miles. You can do. Just keep running!

I saw the ONE MILE TO GO sign and thought yes alright! I am telling you that was one of the longest miles of my life! But it was over!

Only 2.4 miles but it was over! I could celebrate!!

We made it to Key West and the team finished at about 6:15 about the time the sun was going down!

We were the 44th team out of 308 in the mixed open division; 89th team out of 478 overall teams.Β  Total of 30hours 43 minutes!Β  We had some fast runners with a zillion kills!

It was a very fun weekend. I am so glad that I got to experience it. BUT I would never do it again. I do not even want to go back to Florida but Heather has talked me into the Space Coast Marathon. I do not know when but it is on my list now!

I want to thank Nuun for keeping us hydrated and Naawk for keeping the sun rays away!

I want to also thank my van! You all did so awesome, Ran fast, and survived the heat! Thanks Beko for all the great pictures and driving us 400+ miles on minimal sleep! Thanks van 2 for also running fast and surviving the conditions! SO.MUCH.FUN!

    Welcome to the heat and humidity of Florida! Try it in August and September! Space Coast is in December and usually has nice weather. Sign up early cause it goes quickly. Congrats!

      I can’t even imagine being in the Florida in the height of summer! I have heard that it fills up quick!! I need to look into it! πŸ™‚

    Awesome recap! Team NUUNaritavlle was SO much fun. Even this crazy FL runner wouldn’t do this one again. A great experience, but I make fun of people who run 2pm, just sayin. So happy you popped my power arch cherry, bahaha. Good times. Can’t wait to try your tasty treats one day πŸ™‚

    Love Ragnar, and it looked like you had a blast! The night leg always creeped me out… you never know what will run out of the ditch in the middle of Wisconsin! πŸ™‚ I want some of that humidity SO bad right now!

      I love Ragnar too!! I love the night leg! but I think that a lot of people “dread” the that leg! I can’t even imagine living in Minnesota during the winter!!!
