Blue Lake Olympic 2014

9 Jun

I was up at 5:30 this morning. Oatmeal, chocolate coconut peanut butter, strawberries, and energy Nuun for breakfast. Sherrie picked me up at 6ish and we were on our way!

Like I said yesterday there was no real goals for today. I wanted to really have a strong solid effort and go sub 2:45. This was going to be my first race in the 35-39 age group! Scary!!

The weather was perfect. It was cool and cloudy! We got set-up. It takes me almost no time at all. I had a pretty awesome spot in transition which never happens! I was right by the bike in/out. Which means I had to hardly run with my bike. Score!

Talked with some friends. Talked strategy. Not really. Most of us are training for an Ironman so our strategy is more geared toward that and not an Olympic race.

We made our way to the water. Had a very short warm-up. I was a little nervous because I got some new goggles before Sunriver. They worked awesome in the chlorine pool but when I got home and used them in the saline pool they started fogging up. I had tried them in open water couple of times and it went ok. I was hopefully they would be ok this morning. It was only 1500 meters!!

Swim: (26:14) We get lined up and there was less than 20 of us. I said who I am going to draft off of?? Everybody proceeded to get behind me! Ha! We were off. A couple of the leaders in our AG went off. All of a sudden I was by myself. Where the hell was someone to draft off of? Nowhere. I was on my own! I had a great swim. Goggles were great. I sighted well! I caught a little draft on the way in from the guys in the AG behind us. I feel like my only mistake was when getting out of the water I could have swam in a little more. I am usually really good at that. Not sure what happened! I looked at my watch and I had PR’d the swim! Booyah!

T1: (2:28) I loved my rack spot. It was perfect! Got my wetsuit off quick. Sunglasses, helmet, socks and shoes on! I was outta there! I saw Joann and told her I was coming to get her!

Bike: (1:14:17—>19.71mph) Great ride. It is a short out and back. A long out and back. Pretty uneventful. I was going to watch my power, cadence, work on my nutrition, and smile!

The long out we were going into a headwind which was fine because it would be better coming back! I wanted to push harder with the tailwind but I really wanted to have a good run. I thought too I have a big week this week and no need to get crazy TODAY! Finished all of my nutrition right on time!

Unlike last year Erica caught me about 2 miles to transition. I had eyed a girl in a pink shirt that I wanted to catch up to/pass! I finally did and who was it? Anne! I couldn’t believe it! So I caught her and then Erica caught me. We all rode into transition together!

T2: (1:28) Racked bike, helmet off, shoe change. I grabbed my visor and belt! I was off!

Run: (57:44—>9:17 pace)
I didn’t want to go out to fast! I didn’t really want to look at my splits. Anne passed me quickly after we started running and Erica passed a bit after that! I love Blue Lake because I know so many people participating! The run is an out and back. Lots of hi’s and high fives!

I did pretty good. I felt out of gas as I was passing the mile 5 sign. I wasn’t sure pace wise how I was doing cause I just wanted to run on feel! I just wanted to try to push the last 1.2! As soon I got back into the park I could hear the music and there were people cheering! It is about a half mile. I just kept saying to myself, it is almost over, just keep pushing!! I could see the finish line. I got a few last cheers from PTC peeps and I was home! Done!!

I finished in 2:41:56! I was plenty happy with that! I put in a solid effort and felt good afterwards!
Here is the comparison of the 2 years! Small differences!

Congratulations! You did awesome, and I’m so glad your nutrition is right on track now! Crazy you were that close to last year’s time without a taper and with IM training!
I love that you know so many people at races- must be fun to see everyone on the course!

Nice work, Leslie! It looks like you stayed strong (and happy) the entire race and accomplished everything you were hoping for. You are well on your way to your Ironman and should be feeling very confident in yourself. Bravo!
